Amid the spread of COVID-19, companies all over the world are enforcing work-from-home policies, to ensure the safety of their employees and to make sure they do not put themselves at risk by physically going to the workplace. Realistically, workers are finding themselves having to work from home for an indefinite period of time. It is not clear how long this will need to be done. While some might already have experience working from home, others will be doing this for the very first time, which means they will need to figure out the best way to be productive and efficient working in a new environment. This is especially important because the new environment they must now work in is normally an environment for doing the exact opposite of working, which is relaxing. This article will take a look at some of the ways you can stay on task and deliver results without going stir-crazy.

The key to working from home is to have clear communication with your coworkers and your boss. You must know exactly what's expected of you and your tasks for the day. A brief call to kick off the day and another one to wrap up the day should be mandatory, both for you and your boss. Communication is also important because working from home can leave some feeling isolated due to the lack of structure they are used to. Loneliness can make people feel less productive and less motivated while working from home. Video calls and checking in with coworkers can keep your morale up.

Another tip is to treat working from home as a real job. While it might be comfortable to work from home in your pajamas and unbrushed hair, getting dressed the way you normally would for work can make you have a more energetic and productive mindset. In addition, avoid working in your bedroom or sitting on your sofa, and opt for a proper table and chair. Creating the right environment and establishing boundaries within your home for what helps you work from home and what doesn't is crucial. This can also help you feel like you are not stuck at home 24 hours a day.

Working from home while having to care for your children can be an issue, as well. In addition to schools being closed, with social distancing being enforced and people having to stay home, childcare is no longer an option for a number of parents and guardians. Therefore, not only do some working professionals have to work from home, but they have to do so while simultaneously taking care of their children. Both are things they may not be used to but have to tackle at the same time. This can lead to a video call between an employee and his or her manager, where a child is suddenly heard screaming in the background. In this case, managers need to be understanding and compassionate enough for those who need to do both at the same time.
